Armed Forces Connection Helping those who defend us - Jobs and Assistance for Military Members and Veterans

When I left the military, I struggled to find a way to write a resume… I read a bunch of books, got help from the VA Rep at the NH Unemployment Office, but none of it worked… It led to menial jobs with little promise. Then I left to go back down to NC, where I finish my undergraduate degree… As I finished up, I started to worry about my resume and how I would write a good resume that would get me noticed. After several people told me about a company called www.resumedoctor.com, I figured I’d check them out. It starts out pretty mundane – you send in your resume and they give you a 10 line critique (which I later found out was the same critique for every submission…) After the critique, I got a little excited and I bought the $200 package of personal “one on one” counseling, and resume rewrite… I had such high hopes! After an hour or so on the phone of being berated by some guy who was very much “anti-military, anti-establishment”, and being told that I was setting my sights too high by looking for a job higher than 30K, I finally told the guy that he was “fired”! It took another 3 weeks, but he refunded the money with a parting email that was nothing short of degrading and disrespectful… In it, he spelled out how I would likely remain on unemployment for an extended period of time, simply because I had no marketable skills in “today’s fast paced environment”…

Toward the end of our conversation, I told you that I have a hard time explaining what I did while I was on active duty – that it was “just a job” to me – well, I didn’t feel that way when I spoke with AFC (& Kelly)… In fact, I didn’t even need to explain it – it was like they knew – and they were able to put it into words for me… That’s comforting – that’s reassuring – and that’s what I tell everyone that I get the chance to talk with… These guys are exactly what the service member needs – (brutal) honesty, professionalism, loyalty, integrity, and a strong and genuine work ethic… After all, that’s what we expect from one another on the battle field, so why shouldn’t we expect it from those who represent us…
