In today’s employment market, there are many qualified people interviewing for a limited number of positions. Make your interview work to your best advantage. Pay attention to details: grooming, eye contact, and non-verbal behavior are all aspects of your interview that can greatly affect the outcome. Keep in mind that the smallest strength may push you ahead of your competitors!
- Dress appropriately.
- Arrive ten minutes early.
- Bring three copies of your resume and references.
- Bring a notepad and pen in order to take notes.
- Be knowledgeable about the company you are interviewing with and formulate at least two relevant questions about the company.
- Smile and be polite, to the people who greet you as well as your interviewers.
- Remain focused on why you should be chosen for the job.
- Know in advance how you will describe yourself if asked.
- Keep in mind examples of three or four strengths you want to project.
- Don’t fidget or appear distracted during the interview.
- Have a firm, but not crushing, handshake.
- Speak clearly and concisely.
- Be prepared for typical questions, such as:
- Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
- What are your strengths? Weaknesses?
- Why should I hire you?
- What can you do for me that another candidate can’t?
- Thank the employer for the interview and request a business card from everyone you meet with.
- Send an email to your interviewers thanking them for their time.
- Above all, relax and think positively!
